Herschel Lashkowitz papers, 1919-1989.

Personal papers documenting his career as a lawyer, Fargo, N.D. mayor and North Dakota state senator. Includes general legal correspondence and some case files. The extensive mayoral records document all aspects of Fargo city government and includes City Commission meeting minutes from 1954 to 1973. The political papers include constituent mail, legislative documents, state and local Democratic Party papers, and campaign literature material of Mr. Lashkowitz and other state political candidates. In addition, there is an unfinished manuscript of a biography on Lashkowitz, written by B. Whiteman Hall with the working title of "The Second Greatest Story Ever Told". There is also extensive family correspondence between parents Harry & Etta Lashkowitz, and siblings Jane, Shelley, and Lorraine Jeffe.

Lashkowitz, Harry, 1889-1963

Harry Lashkowitz was born in the Ukraine in 1889, immigrating to the U.S.A. with his parents in 1896. The family moved to Fargo, N.D. in 1905. After completing law school in New York in 1912, Harry returned to Fargo to establish a law practice. He married Etta Levitz in 1917. She was born at Devils Lake, N.D. Harry was active in politics, the Democratic Party, B'nai B'rith, and other civic organizations. He died at Fargo in 1963 and Etta in 1971. They had four children, Herschel, Jane, Lorraine,...
